Contemporary Landscape

My landscape work has been described in some paintings, as an aerial view of what you see while looking down when flying, at the land and waterways below. I see geometric shapes everywhere and need nature in my life on a daily basis. I confuse where I am with where I have just been and quite possibly where I desire to be next. It all plays out in my work. There is a dreamlike quality to many of my landscapes; as if they are conveying the feeling of a place, rather than what it actually looks like to the naked eye. I suppose it is a bit like astral traveling- going somewhere while you sleep, in an altered state. Traveling has never been more fun- and there's no security check point to stress over.

the vivid gentle colours and textures of the mighty vast Karoo are portrayed in this work. Bits of dirt and rooibos tea are imbedded into it, to give an additional South African element.

Having lived on the beautiful Eastern Coast of South Africa, on the Indian Ocean, I have a new respect and love for the oceans of the world.

The colours in particular are mesmerising, in their ever changing seasons; the marine life and quirky plants that call these waters their home as well are all completely fascinating for an artist.

I am not a great swimmer at the best of times. I was raised in the Midwestern part of America where lakes, ponds and rivers are the stars of the show. Even in lakes I am a bit of a baby, but I do dally occasionally into the icy cold waters during the summer months while I am visiting family in Wisconsin. Oceans-!!! they are another cuppa tea altogether and I am in complete awe when I watch friends of mine dive into that wild frothy surf and swim away. This is the visual I would imagine the surfers, swimmers and other brave humans see when they approach the surface of the wild oceans worldwide.

I can only imagine the sheer thrill and wildness one feels when surfing. I am not brave enough to try it in this lifetime, but perhaps in another. Soldier on brave ones- I am in awe
